How does USPS Informed Delivery work?

I recently learned about a new service from the US Postal service. While you are putting in your change of address for your beautiful new home, be sure to sign up for Informed Delivery and you will get an e-mail containing ALL of your inbound mail – including packages. Letters are SCANNED and pictures sent directly to your inbox before they physically arrive!

What used to be “My USPS®” was recently upgraded to include Informed Delivery® – a new totally free feature that gives you the ability to see a digital preview of your incoming mail. Informed Delivery allows you to view images of the exterior, address side of your household’s “letter-sized” mailpieces on a computer, tablet, or mobile device. As part of the upgrade, you can receive a daily email containing images of your mailpieces that are arriving soon. AND, if you are expecting a package that has delivery tracking information from a sender such as Amazon or other retailer, then you can get an email that tells you every step of the package’s journey:

So How Does USPS Informed Delivery Work?

  1. Consumer Signs Up – Consumers sign up on usps.com where their email address and identity is verified. If you already have an account, it takes less than a minute.
  2. Mail is Imaged During Processing – Mail is sent. USPS uses existing processes to gather digital images of the exterior of letter-sized mailpieces that are processed through automation equipment.
  3. Image Matched to Delivery Points – USPS automatically matches mailpiece
    images to Informed Delivery users. Interactive campaigns are applied at this
    step (this is ambitious revenue play, but it’s always free to you).
  4. Notification emailed to user – USPS notifies Informed Delivery users of mail arriving soon in an email, dashboard, or mobile app view.
  5. User receives mailpiece – USPS delivers physical mailpieces through regular delivery as usual.

Just like a physical mailbox, Informed Delivery is provided at a household level, based on a delivery point address, but multiple residents can sign up for the feature.

A feature just launched, but not seen in the wild yet is Interactive Promotions. If the original Mailer (aka Sender) has opted to tie in a promotion, USPS inserts an unobtrusive clickable box below the scanned mailpiece like this:

This particular presentation is actually a high-level sales pitch about how to produce effective Mailing Campaigns, but there is no reason why consumers can’t benefit from this completely FREE service.

You can cancel at any time, so it is in their best interest to keep this new service helpful and non-annoying.
